The Jersey Table Tennis Association held the first of this seasons Appleby Academy junior selection tournaments at the Geoff Reed Table Tennis Centre recently. All of the players were from the development and ‘A’ squads, under the tutelage of development officer Craig Gascoyne.

Some 3 hours of exciting table tennis ensued, with all of the players showing those watching the huge improvements they are making as a result of their squad training sessions each week.

The 18 players were divided into three bands according to age and ability, and Oliver Griggs emerged as the winner of Band 1 with a 100% record, with runner-up Chris Morshead running him close in a tight match, 12-14, 16-12, 12-10, 11-6. There were many other tight matches in this group, the most remarkable being Morshead’s 3-2 win over Emily Robins where each of the five games finished 11-9! All of the other players in this band, Phillip Quinn, Robins, Jack Mills and Charlie Hansford managed at least one victory.

Band 2 was dominated by Tyler Gosselin, who won all of his matches for the loss of only four games. His closest challenger Adam Denny was 2-1 ahead in their match before Gosselin rallied to take the match in the decider. Timmy Boulter also put up a brave fight against Gosselin, going down 11-9 in the fifth. As in Band 1, no player came away without a victory here. Jamie Henderson, Oren Le Marquand and Rishi Gangaramani all showing much promise.

Band 3 saw Harry Reid, who has not played any league table tennis yet, emerge victorious in what turned out to be the closest of all three bands. Indeed, with Reid, Dominic Rebindaine and Thomas Wallwork all finishing with 4 wins and 1 defeat to their name, it took a countback to decide the placings, Wallwork edging out Rebindaine for the runner-up slot. Six year old David Quinn belied his age to take fourth spot, just ahead of Jacob Gosselin and Alec McKinley.

Following the event, Gascoyne presented prizes and certificates for the winners and runners-up in each band, together with a prize for the most sporting player, which went to Alec McKinley.
