APPLEBY TABLE TENNIS ACADEMY TRAVEL TO GRANTHAM FOR MAJOR 4* JUNIOR TOURNAMENT.
Eleven members of the APPLEBY Junior Academy of the JTTA travel to Grantham this weekend to compete in a high quality tournament which has attracted a large entry including the England No.1 and No. 2 Juniors who are also ranked No.6 and No.7 at full Senior level !!
The draw has handed the local youngsters some mouth watering matches. Hugo Tupper has been drawn in the No.1 seed Zak Zilesnick’s group in the Under 15 Cadet Singles whilst Ollie Griggs will have a shot at the No. 2 seed Jared Patel also in this age group. Both English players are ranked at 1 and 6 respectively in England at Under 15 level. Chris Morshead, Jordan Wykes and Harry Messervy also get their chances against the fourth, fifth and seventh seeds respectively in the Cadet singles.
Kelsey le Maistre also has a chance in her Cadet Girls Band 1 Singles group which includes the talented No. 5 seed Vicky Smith from Devon. Le Maistre is playing the best table tennis of her short career at the moment and has a great chance in the Band 1 Cadet Girls Singles to get to the final stages helped by her draw in group 3.
Jordan Wykes, Ollie Griggs and Philip Quinn will have chances as well in the Under 13 Boys Singles with Wykes and Griggs facing the No.4 and No.7 seeds in their groups.
The Junior Girls Band 1 sees Jodie and Kelsey Le Maistre in action against strong opposition from England and Ireland and they will both have to then step up a gear in the main event, the Junior Girls Singles where they have to negotiate the No. 6 and No. 8 seeds in their groups.
In the Junior Boys Band 1 Singles [tournament top seeds excluded due to too many ranking points] Josh Band has been installed as No.8 seed and is also tipped as “a lively outsider” by the ETTA press office report below [after his excellent play in the London Senior Grand Prix] for the main event, Junior Boys Open later on during the Sunday afternoon. Jersey’s nine young male players all appear in the Under 18 Boys Singles with Matthieu Fisher drawing the talented No. 8 seed Ping Ho from Middlesex [England No.15 Junior]. Jack Mills has a good chance to proceed in the Under 18 tournament if he can negotiate Group 19 against players from Lancashire and Warwickshire.
Table Tennis Development Officer Craig Gascoyne said, “I am really happy with the draw. Our players have got some top seeds in their groups and have a chance of competing and perhaps beating some of the top players in the U.K and thus improving their ranking.”
The junior players are accompanied by Gascoyne, JTTA President Chris Band, coaches and parents.
