THE DEUTSCHE BANK JERSEY TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION

2010 JERSEY DIVISIONAL TOURNAMENTS FINALS

The Finals of the Deutsche Bank Jersey Table Tennis Association 2010 Jersey Divisional Tournaments were held last weekend at the Geoff Reed Table Tennis Centre.

The Finals provided much entertainment and quality table tennis for the large number of spectators and produced a number of extremely close matches. The Finals again demonstrated the array of growing junior talent in the sport locally under the guidance of  Development Officer, Craig Gascoyne.

This was typified by the opening Division 4 Singles Final in which newcomers to the sport, Domininic Rebindane and Victoria Barnes served up a real treat, Rebindane eventually coming out on top after 5 close fought sets. Barnes had pulled back a 2 sets deficit before going down 11-5 in the 5th and deciding set.

Rebindane was to enjoy more success on the night as he teamed up with Corey Stewart to take the Doubles C title. The young pair overcame their junior rivals Connor O’Shea and Thomas Wallwork over 4 sets, a match in which all 4 players provided evidence of their rapid improvement made over the past 6 months.

Not to be outdone, Billy Hickling and Chris Moorshead produced arguably the match of the night in the Division 3 final, a classic attach versus defence encounter. It was the attack minded Hickling who eventually came out on top against the number 1 seed after 5 hard fought sets, Hickling taking the last 2 games 15-13 and 11-9 in a match which neither player deserved to lose.

Moorshead’s misery was complete as he and partner Harry Messervy lost out in the Doubles B final, another tussle that went the distance and in which all the games were extremely close. Deserved winners of the title were the combination of Michael Fisher and Tyler Gosselin who prevailed 11-6 in the 5th and final set.

Al the aforementioned players should be really proud of their efforts and clearly have fine futures in the game.

At the top level, Craig Gascoyne proved again his status as the Island’s No.1 player by taking the Division 1 title in straight sets against Trevor Lefebvre. The latter did not play badly and there were a number of excellent rallies but Gascoyne proved simply too strong for his opponent with his forceful aggressive topspin play.

Lefebvre did take some consolation as he teamed up with Paul Marshall to a 3-1 victory over the vastly experienced pairing of Bruce Gallichan and Clive Hansford in the Open doubles. The vintage  duo stated well and took the opening set before their younger opponents raised their game to take the match in the end in fairly comfortable fashion.

The absence of 12 year old Oliver Griggs meant that the Division 2 and Doubles A finals have had to be put back until April to coincide with the Island Championships. The former final is eagerly anticipated by all as it will feature Griggs taking on the unique talent that is Jeff Vincent, an amazing 66 years older than his up and coming opponent!  On his way to the final, Vincent put paid to the chances of the No.1 and No. 3 seeds, Darren Le Brun and David Hole respectively.
