DIS ELECTRICAL JERSEY CLOSED TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT 8 TH & FINAL DAY'S REPORTS.
There were more than a couple of close matches in the last two days of the DIS Jersey Closed Table Tennis Tournament. In the Under 13's champion Hugo Tupper found Sam Allen in magnificent form. Allen countered his opponent's attacking style brilliantly and with the match finely balanced at two games all won the next two to claim an unexpected victory. Allen could not produce the same form in the 3 rd Division Singles and fell to the fast improving Tom Morgan 31 albeit in close games. In the 2 nd Division Singles Tupper made up for some of his earlier disappointment by winning the title three games to love against Tom Marsay. The Women's Doubles went the way of the top seeds who confirmed their position with a 40 triumph over Sarah Cooper and Carol Milnes. Eugene Ellis showed some of his old form by defeating his doubles partner Bobby Vincent in the Veteran's Men's Doubles 41. The Mixed Doubles went to the wire with Dave Cronin and Nicola Duke coming back from 20 down and then 32 down to shade the win by four games to three. The last match of the evening was the Under 21 Men's Singles which was battled out between holder Josh Band and St. Joseph's team mate Chris Corfield. This was a superb encounter with Corfield playing some brilliant chopped shots to force errors from the champion. Band had to come back twice from behind before his forehand loops and scything backhands helped him to retain his title with a 42 final margin.
JERSEY JUNIOR TABLE TENNIS HISTORY MADE!!
14 Year old Josh Band defended the three titles he won in 2007 and in 2008 is still the Champion at U15, U18, & U21
He has now won the U15 Title for an unprecedented 5 times on the trot!!
In his final season at Under 15 [Cadet] level, Josh Band has defended The Treble [never done before in Jersey Table Tennis History] by beating Max Tupper in the Under 15's 4---0 to add to his defence of the Under 18 and Under 21 Titles. He adds these to the two major UK singles titles he won earlier in the season and the Jersey Junior Boys Doubles won with Chris Corfield.
In the Under 11's Philip Quinn and Jordan Wykes met in a re match of their encounter for the Under 9's trophy. This time it was Quinn who edged out his opponent by the same narrow margin of four games to three 11 / 7 in the seventh. The match was truly wonderful as the two very young players traded shots which brought gasps of admiration and huge applause from a large audience. The Under 15 Girls was another very close contest with Helen Liron finally getting the better of Lucy Walker 11 / 9 in the seventh after some fantastic rallies that would have graced the top adult matches. Liron was to meet her nemesis however in Sarah Cooper in the Under 18 Girls who ground out a win in the final game of seven, 11 / 9.
The Men's title was claimed by Craig Gascoyne who saw off a spirited performance from the ever youthful Eugene Ellis. Gascoyne attacked from the start and forced Ellis back from the table. However, Ellis responded with some superlative topspin winners from the back court. As the match wore on the quality of Gascoyne's shots won the majority of the crucial points. Both players exchanged some fantastic rallies to huge applause from the audience and the final score of 40 belied the relative closeness of the games.
In the divisional matches the 4 th Division final was won by Jack Messervy who beat Jody Le Maistre 30 and in the 1 st Division final Craig Gascoyne beat Josh Band 30.
