DIS ELECTRICAL JERSEY CLOSED TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT DAY 6 REPORT.
The Men's Singles produced some superb matches and more than a few close finishes at the Geoff Reed Centre on Tuesday night.
In the top half of the draw Paul “Yes Minister” Routier had a 4—1 win against Glenn Brown as did seeded Bobby Vincent against Sam Allen. The experience of Tom Quinn also proved too much for Hugo Tupper winning in four straight. The two other matches produced seven game thrillers. The quickly improving Tom Morgan eventually overcame the more experienced Sam Elliott 11 / 9 , 8 / 11 , 11 / 7 , 11 / 8 , 10 / 12 , 8 / 11 , 11 / 6 .
Luke Walker had a similar battle against the talented Tom Marsay. Walker lost the first game 10 / 12 but powered back to win the next three and looked to be set fair for the last sixteen. Marsay came back with some brilliant winning shots to square the match 7 / 11 in the sixth game. Walker then upped his game with some of his characteristic powerful loops and took the match 4---3. Top seed Craig Gascoyne entered the fray and beat Routier in four joining Tom Quinn in the last sixteen who saw off junior Tom Morgan by the same score. Dave Cronin had to concentrate hard to overcome the wily Clive Hansford but eventually got the verdict by four games to two. Walker came back to the table to face veteran Bobby Vincent who was showing some of his old form and looked on paper to be the stronger player. The fifteen year old attacked from the start and forced errors from his opponent to claim a place in the quarter finals with a 4—2 win. Walker went no further as Dave Cronin was on superlative form as was Gascoyne against Quinn resulting in two four love wins. The top seed then reached the final with a clinical 4—0 win over Cronin who had no answer to the barrage of shots from his adversary.
In the bottom half of the draw Kevin Allen and Chris Corfield cruised through with four love wins against Marcus Hawgood and Scott Cassin respectively. Eugene Ellis dropped just one game to Max Tupper as did Josh Band against Matt Cooper but both made it comfortably to the last sixteen. Ellis also knocked out Martin Tupper to set up a quarter final against Josh Band. Gallichan was meanwhile easing past Chris Corfield four straight in a match which was closer than the score suggested. The Band / Ellis encounter was eagerly awaited following Band's three nil win in the league recently. It went to the wire with Ellis winning the last game 11 - 4 to reach the semis 4 - 3. Gallichan exacted revenge against Allen who had knocked him out of the Division 1 singles earlier on in the week. His 4—2 win was hard fought but equally well deserved. Ellis proved to be a much harder opponent and buoyed by his narrow win over 14 year old Band he took the semi final to Gallichan with some fine winning shots and finishes the winner by four games to one. The final will be between Craig Gascoyne and Eugene Ellis.
The Over 60's Singles was a more sedate affair after the cut and thrust of the earlier Men's matches. Ed le Quesne claimed his place in the final with 4—0 and 4—2 wins over Brian Nicolle and Malcolm Gallichan respectively although he was made to work hard against the latter for his win. Jeff Vincent played brilliantly to see off Harry Cooper and Barry “the cat” Breuilly and only dropped a single game in so doing. The final will be between Vincent and Le Quesne.
