DIS Electrical Jersey Table Tennis Association

CLOSED TOURNAMENT.

As one Open tournament door closes another Closed tournament door opens for the busy Jersey Table Tennis Association. The DIS Electrical Jersey Closed started last night, [Tuesday 15 th ] at the Geoff Reed Centre and 12 year old Hugo Tupper proved to be the star of the show. In the Under13 Singles he progressed to the final without dropping a game [all Island title matches are best of 7 games] with good wins against Jordan Wykes and Lucy Walker. He will meet Sam Allen in the final who had a tougher time but was victorious over Matthew Fisher in four and Jack Mills in five close games.

In the Under 15 Girls singles Jodie le Maistre and Emily Robins entertained the crowd with a six game thriller with both girls playing some excellent shots. Robins won the match 11 / 8 in the sixth game but found Helen Liron in imperious form in the semis with Liron smashing her way to final by four games to one. In the bottom half of the draw the young Lucy Walker had a tough match against her older and more experienced opponent Sarah Cooper. However, it was Walker who took the vital points with some aggressive shots winning 11 / 5, 11 / 8 , 8 / 11 , 12 / 10 , 17 / 15 and will now meet Liron in the final.

Walker and Liron gave a taster of what the Under 15 Girls final might be like as they met in the semi final of the Under 18 Girls . Liron was twice a game down but came back to take the match by four games to two with some of her characteristic grittiness and determination. Sarah Cooper made up for her earlier disappointment by reaching the final at the expense of Emily Robins 13 / 11 in the fifth.

Hugo Tupper then took to the court again against the powerful Scott Cassin. On paper this should have been a relatively straight forward win for Cassin but the left handed 12 year old had other ideas. He took the first two games 11 / 7, 16 / 14, only for his much older opponent to square the match. Tupper then upped his work rate with some fine attacking play and good angled smashes to deservedly take the next two games and the match 4---2. Also in the bottom half of the draw Sam Allen and Matthieu Fisher were slugging it out in a high octane seven game thriller. Allen recovering from 3—2 down to take the last two games 11 / 9, 12 / 10, to claim his quarter final place. Meanwhile in the top half Sam Elliott and Matthew Cooper were locked in another seven game match which Cooper finally won 11 / 2 in the last. Luke Walker cruised into the quarters with a four love win over Tom Morgan and Chris Corfield's chopping style was too much for the improved Myles Hawgood also resulting in a four love result with Max Tupper having an identical win over Michael Fisher.

The two Tupper boys were drawn together in the quarter final with Max having got the verdict in all their previous encounters. Hugo was not to be denied and following his excellent earlier performance he continued in similar attacking vein to beat his older sibling in a pulsating and emotion soaked match by four games to two. This was another superb performance which was loudly applauded by an appreciative audience. Walker dropped just one game against the improving Glenn Brown to join Hugo in the semis along with Corfield who won four straight again in despatching Sam Allen. Tupper met Corfield in the first semi final but found the seventeen year old's chopped returns too hot to handle and he bowed out of the competition after a wonderful run. The top seed, 14 year old Josh Band met Luke Walker in the second semi final following a comprehensive 4---0 win over Mathew Cooper in the quarters. Band hardly put a foot wrong moving his opponent around the table and forcing errors with his deft touch play and intelligent angled and spun attacking strokes. Band made the final by four games to love, 11 / 9 ,

11 / 8, 11 / 8, 12 / 10 having matched Corfield's record of not dropping a game en route.
