On 31 October 2009 two Appleby Academy boys, Philip (9) and David Quinn (6) played in the Stiga Fermanagh Junior Open in Fivemiletown in Northern Ireland. In the Under 10 event there were over 20 entries from Northern and Southern Ireland. Philip, playing in his first U10 event outside Jersey started very well with an unbeaten record in the group stage. He easily won his last 16 match and then faced a quarter final match against his brother David.

David had also done very well in his group qualifying in second place with good wins over much older boys. David had a great win over Glen McCormick from Ulster to reach the quarter final. In the battle of the brothers it was Philip who claimed the semi-final place but with a very close score of 12 – 10, 11-9 in the first two games.

In the semi final Philip faced the number 1 seed, Martin Williaws and despite leading most of the way in the first two games he lost 12- 10, 12-10 and finally 11-6 in the third. Williaws went on to win the Under 10 event.

Both boys also played in the Under 12 event that had 25 entries. Once again nine-year-old Philip qualified from his group but the age gap was too much for David.  Philip had a great win over twelve-year-old Dillian Duffy to reach the quarter finals before losing to Eric Shekleton from Castlera 11-8, 11-8, 11-8.
