CI Senior & Junior Top 12 Report

Craig Gascoyne and Max Tupper both successfully defended their CI Top 12 titles on Saturday. Tupper was unbeaten but had a scare against young Sarnian Lawrence Stacey before closing out a 3--2 win. His final match against Matt Stubbington was close and unpredictable but the Victoria College student kept his nerve in some tight rallies to retain his title.

Craig Gascoyne in the senior event was coasting along until he met Olly Langlois who had beaten him in the Island Games. Gascoyne went two love up and was 8--3 up in the third but eased up a little. Langlois seized his chance and roared back to win the game and then the next two to complete an unexpected victory from the jaws of defeat. Gascoyne then had to beat the Guernsey No.1 Garry Dodd and the uber talented and highly experienced Phil Ogier to retain his crown. Dodd threw everything at Gascoyne but Jersey's Development Officer edged home 3--2 with some truly breathtaking punched backhands down the line. In the final match Ogier got the ball back umpteen times in his own inimitable fashion but Gascoyne completed his task 3-1 with numerous angled smashes derived from thoughtful and focussed play.
