Four young members of the Jersey Table Tennis Association's APPLEBY Academy have just returned from the International Primary Schools' Tournament in Guernsey with some excellent results.

The team was Jordan Wykes [10], Philip Quinn [9], Tyler Gosselin 12] and Timmy Boulter [9] - coach Craig Gascoyne assisted by Dennis Hansford, Barry Wykes and Tom Quinn.

Jersey had a tough start in the team matches [consisting of eight singles and two doubles encounters] ,having to face Scotland and then the number one seeds England. Jersey lost both matches 10-0 but Gosselin emphasised his improved game narrowly losing 3 - 1 to the Scotland No. 4 just pipped 13-11 and 12-10 in the 3rd and 4th games.

Jersey then had great start against Ireland in their next match - Quinn lost in three tight games but Wykes recorded a great win 3 - 2 over the Ireland No. 2 Ryan McConkey to level the match at one game all. Narrow losses in the doubles for the Jersey team were soon forgotten as Wykes recorded another great win over the Irish No.1 Jonathan Porter. Gosselin followed this with a superb display to take the other reverse singles resulting in a very respectable 7-3 loss to the Irish.

The next opponents were the team from the Isle of Man. The Jersey youngsters came out all guns blazing with all recording great wins to seal a superb 7-3 victory.

Wales followed but were far too strong in all departments resulting in a 10-0 loss.

The really big one was next..........Guernsey. With the inter insulars coming soon it was going to be interesting to see how the Jersey players had improved.

They did not disappoint!! Wykes and Quinn both won their opening matches 3--0. This was followed by a close loss for Boulter but the Caesarean quartet took both doubles in emphatic style. With more reverse singles wins for Wykes, Gosselin and Boulter the Jersey youngsters celebrated a fantastic 8-2 win to send a big message to the Sarnians.

The individual matches were on the following day and all the Jersey players had a tough draw. Jordan Wykes was the only player to get out of his group with two excellent wins to reach the main knockout. Quinn and Gosselin both recorded one win along with Boulter entered the Consolation plate event.

Wykes exited in the main event in the first knockout round but gave his all against the England No. 2 Marcus Giles.

Quinn and Gosselin both made the Consolation quarter finals with respective wins over the Isle of Man's Ben Christian and a superb 3--2 victory by Gosselin over the Irish No. 3 Mark Gordan. Both then bowed out but not before Quinn had almost taken another prized scalp losing 11/9 in the fifth game to the Irish No. 1.

" The four boys all played amazingly well and the performances they put in were superb. The APPLEBY Academy training is certainly working very well as these results prove against the top youngsters in the UK," said JTTA Development Officer Craig Gascoyne.
