APPLEBY ELITE SQUAD JUNIOR SELECTION TOURNAMENT 12 Dec 2009.
Eighteen young players from the Elite squad of the APPLEBY Academy competed in the latest selection tournament over the weekend. As before the players were placed into three banded groups of ability. Band 3 had to be decided on countback with Michael Fisher and Chris Morshead both winning four and losing one match each. It was the encounter between the two, won by Fisher 3—1 that gave him the spoils. Harry Messervy took third place but had to withstand a spirited performance from Timmy Boulter who eventually succumbed 8/11, 11/7, 15/13, 9/11, 11/4. Jack Mills and Philip Quinn also had chances with Mills losing a five game thriller to eventual winner Fisher and Quinn winning and losing in two very close, four game matches. Band 2 was dominated by the superb play of Tom Marsay who did not drop a single game in his five matches! Thomas Morgan claimed the runner up slot only losing to the eventual winner by three games to one. Jack Messervy took third spot but only after having survived a brilliant onslaught from Jodie Le Maistre. The games went 6/11, 11/4, 14/12, 7/11, 12/10 finally in a relieved Messervy’s favour. Kelsey Le Maistre and Ollie Griggs took the other two spots Band 1 had a similar clear winner in Max Tupper who continues to impress exhibiting some silky skills. Three players drew for third place with Scott Cassin, Luke Walker and Josh Band still level on countback. It went to points won less those lost and it was Cassin who deservedly took the runner up place. Hugo Tupper and Jordan Wykes took the minor places with the 10 year old Wykes in particular gaining valuable experience in his matches.
