Report on 12 - 15 April

The Geoff Reed Table Tennis Centre has been a hive of activity all week as players young and old have been taking part in the qualifying rounds of this year’s Deutsche Bank Jersey Table Tennis championships.

Luke Walker(seeded 3) sprung the first surprise of the championships by defeating defending champion and number 1 seed Josh Band by 4 games to 1 in the semi-final of the Under 21 Open event. Walker will face number 2 seed Max Tupper in the final after Tupper had comfortably seen off the challenge of Scott Cassin in the other semi. The Junior Doubles final sees top seeds Walker and Band face up to Max and Hugo Tupper.

The finals of both the Over 40’s and Over 50’s will be between old rivals Eugene Ellis and Bruce Gallichan, with each player relatively untroubled in reaching the finals. Both players will square up again in the Veteran Doubles final, Elliis partnering Kevin Allen and Gallichan with Tom Quinn. Hot favourites for the Mixed Doubles will be number 1 seeds Jacob Wankowicz and Nicola Duke who will take on Ellis and Kelsey Le Maistre.

Undoubtedly the best game of the tournament so far was the quarter final of the Under 18 boys event, which saw number 1 seed and defending champion Max Tupper take on his younger brother Hugo, seeded 5. A thrilling match of superb attacking table tennis which swung one way then the other saw Hugo take the match 4-2, to huge applause from the spectators. Hugo followed this up with a 4-0 win over Scott Cassin to reach the final, where he will meet Josh Band, a 4-2 winner over Luke Walker to gain revenge for his defeat in the Under 21’s.

Top seeds Kelsey and Jodie Le Maistre will battle in out for the title of Under 18 Girls champion, Jodie defeating the promising Victoria Barnes in her semi, with Kelsey beating Emily Robins for the loss of one game. The Ladies final, as expected will be between defending champion Kay Lefebvre and Island Games individual silver medallist Nicola Duke, although Duke was pushed all the way by the talented Kelsey Le Maistre, surely a future champion in the not too distant future.

Hugo Tupper will start as favourite against the talented Ollie Griggs in the Under 15 Boys final, Griggs surviving a marathon seven game semi-final against 10 year old  Jordan Wykes. Wykes and Phillip Quinn will meet in a repeat of last year’s Under 11 final.

Further qualifying takes place on Monday and Tuesday next week, with all the finals being played on Thursday and Friday. Winners will take on their Guernsey counterparts at the Channel Island Championships in Guernsey at the end of the month.
